The small town with the long history is ideally situated on the shore of the largest natural lake in the Allgäu region. Here, routes across the Alps, lake Constance, and the castles of Ludwig II are all within a stone's throw. In the middle is the cradle of German cheese making - Immenstadt. The only open-air museum of its type, the Allgäu mountain farmers museum, has lively displays on this subject. The oldest town in Oberallgäu combines history, culture, and nature to a highly exuberant common denominator. The historic town centre, with its castle and artistically designed fountains and squares, is an attractive framing for the cradle of the Allgäu dairy industry and of the German hosiery industry. A combination of mediteranean ambiance and the relaxed Bavarian lifestyle, with the high Alps of the Allgäu as silent onlookers.
Location/Getting there:
There are many ways to reach the southernmost part of Germany easily and quickly. By rail to the mainline station at Kempten/Allgäu, with direct connections to Immenstadt. By car on Autobahn (motorway) A7 to Kempten/Allgäu, and then on B19 to Immenstadt. By plane to the Allgäu Airport in Memmingen, with flight connections to/from Cologne/Bonn, Hamburg, Berlin, Valencia, Rome, etc. There are further easily accessible international airports in Munich, Stuttgart and Friedrichshafen.
Local events and cultural highlights:
Immenstadt celebrates traditional festivals throughout the year. In February, the “Funkenfeuer” (spark fires) blaze on the mountains, and the first day of May brings a new maypole into the town, whith traditional costumes and music. The traditional cheese and farmers' market in August displays the full variety of Allgäuer cheeses. On 20th September at the latest, the four-legged suppliers of milk, beautifully groomed and decorated, are in a hurry to descend to the valley - the only town cattle round-up in Germany is a unique experience! In Immenstadt, summer lasts longer - the festival known as the 'Immenstadt Summer' delights from spring to late autumn with folk music, jazz, and comedy. And as soon as “Immenstadt glows”, everyone knows that Christmas is here. Light installation in the beautiful merchants' houses and in the markets in the three town squares blend together in the Allgäu mountain Christmas.
